Master Class #107: The Power of a Podcast
Podcasts are one of the quickest growing media platforms in the world and are a terrific way to connect with audiences. Here are a few tips to elevate your podcasting prowess and keep your listeners tuned in.
First, embrace your personality. One of the advantages of a podcast is you know people are tuning in because they want to hear not just what you have to say, but how you say it. Don't be afraid to let your guard down, crack some jokes and act like your listeners are your friends - all within acceptable professional boundaries, of course.
Next, don't be afraid to mix it up with some guests. Even if your podcast is primarily solo, bringing in a new voice from time to time can be an exciting change of pace which keeps your show on peoples' minds. Engaging in interesting conversations with others makes audiences feel like they're privy to a conversation, which will increase their connection to the show and make them want to keep listening.
Finally, try to find the right balance between scripted and unscripted. Every podcast has its own happy medium, and the only way to find it is through experimenting. One episode, try scripting out the whole thing. One episode, try keeping things extemporaneous. Once you figure out where your strengths and weaknesses are, do some tinkering to find that balance.
