OUR TAKE ON THE NEWS IN NEW JERSEY

ON THE RAILS - Anyone who commutes by train should be laser focused on Donald Trump today. Not to capture the latest buffoonery, but because the President is unveiling his long-awaited infrastructure plan. Will this "master of the deal" step up and deliver the $15 billion of so that was promised for the Gateway Tunnel project? Or will he play games, declaring that New Jersey and New York cough up even more money to get priority for federal funds? There's no question, whatsoever, that this tunnel is critically needed. Let's put the issue in a language our President understands: If there is another tunnel under the Hudson, your treasured properties here will be worth even more money. So, keep your side of the bargain, OK?

LEONIA - You can't make everyone happy. That's the message for Leonia officials, who solved one issue, and are now dealing with another. First, they appeased residents by blocking George Washington Bridge traffic from heading down 60 local streets. But now, as the Record reports, local businesses are breathing fire because, well, the traffic over the past three weeks is being diverted. Local restaurants, nail salons and liquor stores are reporting losses, as the very public message is that the roads are closed. The mayor and council offered one solution: sending out a letter to residents on Wednesday, reminding them the businesses are open. They blame the media, of course, for reporting on a new ordinance that affects thousands of commuters every day. The key we all need to know: Non-residents driving to and from Leonia businesses can use any street. And, local businesses note, they can do so as often as they wish. And please hurry.

SOUTH JERSEY - The grand assumption is that the population of South Jersey is all in Philadelphia this morning. Schools closed. Businesses closed. Just a bunch of "Let's Go Eagles" flyers blowing through the empty suburban streets.  With 2 million people jamming into the city for the big parade, fans have filled SEPTA, PATCO and NJ Transit trains from the wee hours of the morning, with a lot of westbound-only trains.  It's gonna be a great party, with only 400 or so references to Rocky Balboa. Meanwhile, north of Trenton, where we proudly eat our Taylor Ham and properly root for New York teams, we are trudging in to work.

TRENTON - You certainly hear a lot of crap in the capital city. But city officials are more focused on the crap you see, launching a plan through March to strategically fight the crow feces regularly covering the streets. The Trentonianreports the city cops will be initiating very precise "crow dispersal activities." This includes pyrotechnics, lasers, spotlights, amplified recordings of crow distress calls and crow effigies. This impressive effort began Monday. Will it all work? The results, hopefully, should be obvious.
